SONY SPORTS CFS-930 Stereo Radio Cassette Player This is a fully functional unit that has been disassembled, serviced, and had its belt replaced. The SONY SPORTS CFS-930 is a stereo radio cassette player released around 1987, made in Japan. The SONY SPORTS series was a line of radio cassette players and Walkmans designed primarily for the North American market from the 1980s to the 1990s, emphasizing outdoor use with its splash-proof and shock-resistant design. Therefore, the SONY SPORTS series has a history of being viewed as a special, almost reverse-imported item by some fans. This unit is an early model of the SONY SPORTS series, an even earlier model before the adoption of the blue logo. It is extremely rare to see this model in Japan, making it a historically rare collector’s item for the SONY SPORTS series. The design is still linear and shares many similarities with regular boomboxes, giving the impression of the eve of the series’ establishment as a sports model. The logo is also understated, adding to the charm of the series’ early days. As an early dustproof and splashproof model, particular emphasis was placed on water resistance and robustness, giving it a tougher impression compared to later models. Although it lacks MEGA BASS, it showcases Sony’s meticulous sound design from the 80s, making it a unit where you can fully enjoy the Sony sound of that era. Early Sony Sports models were renowned for their sound quality, and this model is no exception, offering a very pleasant and indescribably good sound quality. The impression changes depending on the attachment location, but personally, I prefer the stylish balance when attached to the side. Cassette tapes are not included. Product Condition This is a working unit that has undergone maintenance such as disassembly, cleaning, and belt replacement. This vintage unit has been treated to address common issues and magnetic residue on the heads, so you can enjoy music immediately. Appearance: There are some minor scratches and discoloration due to age, but they are not noticeable from the front, and the condition is very good. There are no tears or missing rubber parts. There is some sun damage on the top, which appears to be from a sticker, and a crack-like mark on the back (though not a crack). Please check the photos. While it looks clean in the images, there are minor scratches and dirt commensurate with its age. There may be some cracks that have been overlooked. Operation: Cassette operation has been confirmed. It features auto-reverse and DIR functions, which are not present in the CFS-920, and both function properly. Basic functions such as cassette playback, fast forward, and rewind work without problems. Due to the structural characteristics of this unit, there may be some slight mechanical noise during tape transport. It is hardly noticeable during music playback, but it may be audible during quiet or silent sections. This is within the natural range for a vintage mechanism. Not all functions have been checked. Maintenance Details Replaced the cassette drive rubber belt with a high-quality one and adjusted the tape speed. Cleaned and demagnetized the playback head and capstan (using a SONY head eraser). Cleaned the interior and exterior during disassembly. Removed as much dirt as possible from the exterior and finished with a polishing and protective agent.
