Sony Walkman Professional WM-D3. This was a faff to get working again. As is always the case with WM-DD Walkmans the main gear had split – so I had the replacement Gear ready when it arrived – got that installed and still wouldn’t play – tracked that down to a cracked smaller gear – so ordered a new replacement, waited for 2 weeks for it to arrive and got that installed – away it went running as smooth as butter. Everything has been cleaned and lubricated – the tape counter belt has been replaced and works, Pause works. I’ve checked recording and that’s working perfectly. Maybe a little quiet through the headphones and wee bit of a resonant hum when volume up full. Rewind works but it’s a little clattery. Might need a wee tinker to get it 100% perfect, but I’m really being picky, it’s really, really close and perfectly useable. As with all my refurbished Walkmans you don’t have to take my work for how good they sound because I provide you with a video so you can hear for yourself. I’m not a professional sound engineer – I feed the output from the walkman into the mic input on my Canon DSLR. These are complex analogue machines in a digital world – the old belt residue must be completely and meticulously removed – otherwise the new belt will wobble causing wow and flutter. Mechanically as is always the case with these WM-DD Walkmans, the main gear had split and it wouldn’t play. I’ve replaced the gear and low and behold another smaller gear was cracked – so ordered and installed the replacement. Cleaned the head, roller and capstan and it’s now playing beautifully – in stereo, at the right speed with no wow or flutter. Doesn’t always start the first time – maybe a little quiet through the headphones, but line out seems fine. Pause works and I’ve checked Recording which worked perfectly. Fast-Forward working fine – Rewind a little clattery. The volume & record potentiometers have been cleaned so now adjust smoothly without crackle or dropout. It still has the battery cover and the battery terminals are corrosion free. This Walkman is useable on a daily basis – sounds as good as the day it was new and should not give you any trouble for years to come. I have 10 years experience refurbishing 100’s of Walkmans! You get what you pay for – there won’t be any disappointment when it arrives – it will work as described! I’m not an audio engineer which is why I include a video so you can hear it play and judge for yourself. I do not extensively test these over periods of hours/days – I don’t have the time. My only guarantee is that it should work as you see in the video when it arrives.
