Released in 1994 in Japan as the flagship double deck ES model for the new range of decks fitted with the newly launched Dolby S noise reduction technology. Circuitry for both decks, no amorphous heads, no. REC volume control, no fader, no Auto rec level control and SUA as WR901S (same as WR835S but with LA heads added) but with different internal boards and reduced functions. 3 x Motor Mechanism (Capstans / Reel / Assist) for each mechanism. Powered tape loading (by remote also). Laser amorphous heads with high-purity oxygen-free copper PC-OCC winding. Durable and with best possible frequency response. Automatic tape type selection. Composite cassette holder for vibration reduced environment. Full aluminum front panel, greatly increasing stability and reducing vibration. 2 X independent Dolby B / C / S with HX PRO & MPX 19 kHz FM radio carrier broadcast filter. The newly developed Dolby S chip (by Sony inhouse) will be used as a pre-fabricated micro-board in all Sony decks after this generation, ensuring absolute compatibility for decoding. Generous Frequency Response: 25 Hz to 20Hz (Metal tape), 18kHz (Chrome tape), 16kHz (Ferric tape). Wow and Flutter: ± 0.09% Wpeak / 0.05% WRMS. Automatic calibration with two test frequencies (400Hz & 10kHz). Manual BIAS / LEVEL fine adjusting with FL indication of achieved levels. Manual tape speed adjust for DECK A – ideal for remaking recordings that are tape speed wise wrongly recorded, add or change dolby encoding. Control, also from remote. Automatic recording level control. Fader circuit, auto pause. High speed dubbing with manual control of the speed. Gold plated RCA jacks and headphone port. 4 digit double tape counter. Quick reverse – detects the beginning or ending of the magnetic portion of the tape, triggering immediate reverse engagement, both decks. Bundled with original remote commander RM-J902, new batteries, power cord EU, user manual for the WR901S (closest English available variant). The following service operations have been completed. Full disassembly to the smallest components. Deep clean inside and outside, degreasing with special solvents. Mechanisms tear down, clean, degrease to bare metal/plastic, new grease and oil to gears and capstans and motors, clean the contacts, rotary encoder, photo-transistors. New belts and pinch rollers fitted. Every contact, connector and potentiometer on the boards were cleaned with contact cleaner. New high-quality step-down toroidal transformer fitted inside, with metal bracket, 100 VA (twice than necessary). Added new IEC power connector with clear phase marking, Fuse socket (had none before, but into the transformer) ground for EMI (not connected to chassis to avoid ground loops via RCA cables). Added EMI filter board to clear noises and harmful frequencies / harmonics from today’s polluted power grids. Full audio path recapping of all audio related circuits (voltage regulators, PB amp, REC amp, HXpro, Bias osc, Dolby BCS, line amp, headphone amp, calibration board) using top class Nichicon UFG / Muse series caps. To be very clear…. The old caps still work BUT the newer ones are better in specs term then those and provide a very long time investment protection, as the original ones will start to decay significantly in the following years (estimated good spec life cycle of 25-30 years). That is why the sound is maybe even better that when new.. Replaced all touch controls on the front boards, again, as a long term protection measure as the oxide is building up with time. Added a thick metallic plate on the bottom to increase. Polished the flywheels to ensure smooth belt path and no microscopic irregularities. Foam/sponge from the tape holders giving their age. And melting is normal. Tape paths checked with SONY MC-112C mirror cassette. Speed / W&F checked with MTT-211NA test tape. Azimuth adjusted with TCC-151 test tape, minor corrections were necessary since factory calibration. REC phase match checked and adjusted to be nearly identical to the source signal. Demagnetized with Sony HE-3. Full internal calibration to factory specs (WA9ES values used since audio boards are identical). All functions tested, stress test with various tapes, PB & recordings. Hires Pictures are available from the restoration process of this unit for the new owner. Many painstakingly long hours of work and labor have been invested in this unit, with much care and attention to details. All of the above will ensure a generous service life for the new owner. Overall, it is one of the highest quality deck on the market from that generation, certainly from SONY, ideal for medium – high passionate / knowledge users / collectors. It fits perfectly in Hi-Fi stacks alongside K909ES, K808ES, 222ESJ, 333ESJ, 555ESJ and so on, other models with sharp corners of the same generation or previous ones (without Dolby S). It produces warm sound, low distortion, rich bass and highs, and is most suited for listening high quality recordings or to make them. Now when cassette tapes are getting more expensive (and appreciated in consequence), having a higher quality deck (serviced truly, not “changed belt / tested good / running fine”) that can record brilliantly even on used or cheaper tapes is a smart choice. But, if interested and located in other areas US, Canada, Australia and so on… For potential US based customers – the power modification is reversible so the unit will be delivered in 100 V configuration and a special cable from Japanese socket to IEC will be included, so to be used with an external power convertor sourced locally. Conversions is not desirable by all means. Please feel free to ask any questions and I will be happy to be of service! Thanks for your interest!
