Vintage Sony Walkman WM-33 Personal Cassette Player. With Sony MDR-027 Headphones. Totally original and very rare. In full working order, plays, winds forward and reverse. I have replaced the drive belts. Very Loud and Clear volume. Graphic Equaliser in full working order. Supplied with Sony MDR-027 headphones with brand new ear foams (never worn). Headphones work perfectly and come with a spare set of new ear foams. No Belt Clip, I removed it sometime in 1987 and haven’t seen it since. Cassette Door does not lock closed. It will stay mostly closed with a cassette in place. I use a rubber band to ensure that it stays closed while out and about. The WM-33 was an entry-level model that aimed to offer Sony quality and prestige in a sector of the market which contained many offerings from lesser manufacturers, branded or otherwise. The Previous WM-22 had done very well in this role, offering high quality and durability at a very economical price. To keep the cost down, the WM-33 used some novel techniques. For the first time, the mechanism and the electronic printed circuit were not two separate parts but assembled as one, with the mechanical parts being assembled through holes in the circuit board. The mechanism, which was mostly made from moulded plastic, was remarkable in its absence of screws or other fixings and was mostly assembled by clipping the various parts together. The whole assembly was fitted into the cabinet without screws, instead pegs and spigots located it in place. A great feature of this Walkman that most people did not know about is that it uses an analogue closed loop servo IC to drive an advanced motor design similar to that used on the Sony WM-BF22. When you listen to this player, you will notice straight away how smooth the tape speed is. Sony has always been the leaders in innovation and it is a big improvement from the cheap d. Motors that were commonly used by other manufacturers of that time. From an electronics point, this Walkman was a major technological leap forward for Sony and the components they used here marked a new era in design engineering for some of the later models. Once Sony started to improve the motor design, they also began looking into power management functions for the motor. This refinement enabled later generation of Walkmans to operate for longer periods on just a single battery.
