This is the SONY top-of-the-line Denon TC-D5M. It supports metal tapes. Prior to listing, it has undergone cleaning of all parts, restoration treatment, replacement of drive system parts, and sound adjustments, making it fully overhauled and essential for continued use. Despite being old, its appearance is good (in my opinion). It offers ultra-high sound quality and is very rare. You will hardly notice the typical sound fluctuations and excessive noise common with cassette tapes. It produces powerful and good sound. It showcases the performance and sound quality of a professional Denon. The Sony power adapter AC-9 shown in the photos is included. Basic cleaning of the exterior and interior, cleaning of mechanical parts, reassembly, main belt replacement, counter belt replacement, cleaning of the headphone jack, cleaning of the microphone jack, cleaning and polishing of the head section, replacement and cleaning of rollers, and cleaning of volume parts. Azimuth adjustment and speed adjustment. All functions have been checked: playback, recording, stop, fast forward, rewind, and auto shut-off. The level meter, peak indicator, lamp lighting, and counter are also operational. Long-duration operation tests and listening tests have been conducted. Measurement tools were used for speed adjustment, wow and flutter measurement, and azimuth adjustment. Appropriate chemicals and oils were used during the repair process. Although it is a very old machine, it has been restored to a condition very close to its original state through disassembly cleaning, replacement of key parts, and fine sound adjustments. I would like to pass it on to someone who will take good care of it. It is a vintage item, but you can enjoy it with the pleasant sound just like back in the day. Offered is a serviced and tested Marantz PMD201 Professional Cassette Recorder in current is very good operational and cosmetic condition plus the owners manual and an OEM AC / 4.5V DC power adapter (it is unusual because of its negative center tap). This is a mono channel cassette deck with two heads (erase and playback/record). After over 25 years parts do wear. Servicing included three new belts (the old belts were, as expected, a bit stretched with some loss of elasticity), standard cleaning of the tape path, lubrication of the bearing surfaces (and reel pins) and then testing of most functions under record and playback (includes resetting of record/playback levels, bias and tape speed). The tape speed is good when tested with a standard calibration tape. The pots are not scratchy. Cosmetically the deck is in fine shape with a modest number of typical surface scratches. Please refer to the photos. The battery compartment is clean. Mono channels. VU metering (working). Limiter (responsive). Tone Control (working). 25% pitch control (tested). Manual record level. 1/8″ microphone input (not tested). Built in microphone (working). Microphone attenuation 0, -10, -20dB (working). RCA line in/out (working). 1/4″ headphone out (working). Half-speed Rec/Play (working). Telephone in/out (not tested). Remote control in (3/32″) (not tested). Built in speaker (working). External speaker output (1/8″), (working). Takes 3x D-cell batteries or a Marantz Rechargeable Battery Pack (RB-430) which is by now probably impossible to obtain (runs fine with alkaline batteries). Testing identified a few quirks. The external speaker on/off switch has absolutely no effect. If there is a mono 1/8 (3mm) jack plugged into the external speaker jack then the internal speaker turns off and the output goes to the external speaker. Otherwise the built-in speaker operates as expected. The transport of this deck, during playback or record, isn’t as quiet as some other decks but it runs smoothly. If a recorded tape is played in a stereo deck there is about a 2dB difference in the signals between the left and right channels.

Is in excellent condition apart from some very small marks and signs of cosmetic wear and a missing Meter Bezel, as seen in photos, All buttons are present and work as they should, the battery compartment is clean, the volume raises/lowers without crackle and is fully operational functioning as intended. Item is located in the Preston PR5 area and you are more than welcome to view/collect item. These are great little bits of wonderful vintage retro history you can cherish for hopefully many more years. YouTube Video Of This Unit In Operation. However everything else is full operational. This unit sounds great and has Very Little. (see information below) and there are a few marks on the outer case. This is what you would expect of an item of this age, overall this is in brilliant visual and working condition. Work Completed On This Unit As follows. All Internal dirt or dust removed and cleaned. New Idlers fitted were needed. New Pinch Rollers fitted or cleaned were needed. Capstan Cleaned and checked. Re-oiled / Greased Were required. Re-align the Play head were required (Azimuth). Demagnetized Play Back Head and Tape Path. Speed Set with lab reference tape and oscilloscope. Full External sanitize and clean. All Functions checked were possible. The unit is fully operational and functions as intended (apart from the eject lock). Everything that is shown in pictures is what it comes with and shows its condition, I have tried to describe the item to the best of my ability. For advice on recording methods and levels. Wow and Flutter: This is the waver in a reproduced tone or group of tones that is caused by irregularities in the tape drive speed during recording, duplication, or playing. For example, a change in the angular velocity of the capstan, or dragging of the tape audio cassette shell. The terms “wow and flutter” are often referred to together, flutter being a higher-rate version of wow. There are many factors that can increase wow and flutter mainly from age and use, this can be dirty or dry moving parts of the unit, including a dirty capstan, polished capstan, capstan bearings, dirty pinch roller/s, dirty head and dirty motor wheel after a belt change. A Worn belt, belt size, quality and pinch roller issue are also the main factors of wow and flutter. All these potential causes are meticulously checked during my refurbishments. Deformations in the cassette compartment can also be a cause, but this is obviously down to which cassette you use and its quality, I always advise a full REW and FF of an older tape before playing, which can help. The recorded sound is a direct feed into a DLSR camera which has an auto record level adjustment, so on REW and FF or between tracks the record level increases to maximum, therefore the background hiss will be amplified to maximum.
