Here’s a rare treat for someone – the very rare Sony Walkman. WM-F107 – one of the first electronic devices to feature Solar Power. Inside the Walkman is a rechargeable gumstick battery – that the solar panel charges. I’ve had a few of these – quite often they’re a bit grubby from days at the beach, but I’ve generally not had much success getting them back working again. No issues getting this running – the belt had gone, replaced it and gave it a service and away it went – as good as the day it was new. This is a very rare, very sought after Walkman, in stunning condition which is working just as well as it did on the day it was new. As with all my refurbished Walkmans you don’t have to take my work for how good they sound because I provide you with a video so you can hear for yourself. I’m not a professional sound engineer – I feed the output from the walkman into the mic input on my Canon DSLR. These are complex analogue machines in a digital world – the old belt residue must be completely and meticulously removed – otherwise the new belt will wobble causing wow and flutter. In absolutely stunning condition – it’s not 100% pristine, but it’s a close as it gets – see pictures. Mechanically the belt had turned to goo so the old belt residue has been meticulously cleaned and a new belt installed – the head, pinch rollers and capstans have been cleaned – so it now plays perfectly, in stereo, at the right speed, in both directions with no wow or flutter, it rewinds and fast-forwards as it should and changes directions perfectly. The volume potentiometer has been cleaned so the volume adjusts smoothly without crackle or dropout. Solar functionality is untested – it still has it’s original rechargeable battery inside – I unplugged the battery pack and the radio ran for a few seconds before stopping – would probably work for longer after sitting in the sun for a while. This is a perfectly useable Walkman. I have 10 years experience refurbishing 100’s of Walkmans! You get what you pay for – there won’t be any disappointment when it arrives – it will work as described! I’m not an audio engineer which is why I include a video so you can hear it play and judge for yourself. I do not extensively test these over periods of hours/days – I don’t have the time.
